BEAUTY AND THE BEAST HORROR

Prompt: create a book cover for a horror version of Beauty and the Beast.

PROCESS

This project was made alongside Cinderella, so I designed them together and intended to make them match. I imagined what a horror Beauty and the Beast would be like, and made the sketches after those ideas. I played mostly with the idea of barely showing the beast, rose vines, and the mirror. In the end, I went with the outdoor look of the castle to match alongside the Cinderella cover.

The final design was made utilizing public domain and free to use photos and PNGs to create the image of the castle and add the roses. While the background and castle is black and white, the rose offers a pop of color, and the red communicates some sense of danger. Compared to the uncaring, cold outside of Cinderella's story, Belle is about to face an active danger within the castle walls.

FIRST DRAFT

The draft was almost completely changed upon further work, though the main difference was replacing vectorized, flat decor with realistic images to match the cover. The tree was also replaced with a bush, as roses down grow on trees and it didn't really fit. I also abandoned the lightning as it made the tagline harder to read and cluttered the design. One of the bigger and really important differences was simplifying the amount of type faces, as the original amount was close to 5, but is now only 2. This makes it feel more cohesive and readable, while the original 5 made it feel disconnected and busy.
