Schrodinger's Dog
The story follows Deb after having to have her dog, Winnie, put down after months of sickness with no sign of getting better. During the rest of the day, she realizes all the small things she misses about him. The walks through the park, the car rides, the scratching at the door, him sitting in a pillow next to her while she sleeps, she misses it all and has to grapple with Winnie being gone.
As if to make her feel better, or perhaps to mock her, when she wakes up in the middle of the night and goes downstairs, she is met with a familiar face. An exact copy of Winnie is pawing at her to pick him up.
This story is based upon a dream I had after I had lost by childhood dog. In the dream, my little guy was still alive, happily wagging his tail and playing with me and my family. In the middle of the dream, I had suddenly remembered we had put him down a few days prior, and I started freaking out. Everyone was trying to get me to calm down and telling my he's fine, look he's right here, but I continued screaming that he's dead until I woke up.
